Compassionate Care for Flu Symptoms

The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness that can strike suddenly, causing symptoms that range from mild to severe. At Mesa Family Physicians, we provide fast, same-day care to help you manage symptoms and prevent complications. We treat flu symptoms such as:

Fever and chills

Cough and sore throat

Body aches and fatigue

Headaches

Nausea or vomiting (more common in children)

Our goal is to help you feel better quickly with treatment that’s tailored to your specific needs.

Common Signs You May Have the Flu

While flu symptoms often resemble those of a cold, they typically appear more suddenly and feel more intense. Here are the most common signs:

Fever and Chills – A sudden, high fever is a hallmark of the flu.

Muscle and Body Aches – Common throughout the body and often severe.

Fatigue – Feeling extremely tired or weak, even after rest.

Dry Cough or Sore Throat – Often accompanies fever and fatigue.

Headaches – Can be moderate to severe.

Nasal Symptoms – Congestion and runny nose may appear early.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms – More likely in children, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

Our Diagnostic Approach

How We Evaluate Flu Symptoms

During your visit, our providers will ask about your symptoms, how long they’ve lasted, and whether you’ve had any recent exposure to others who are sick. We may perform a physical exam and recommend a rapid flu test to confirm the diagnosis.

Based on your results, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan, which may include antiviral medications, rest recommendations, and supportive therapies to ease symptoms and help you recover faster.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Know When Home Care Isn’t Enough

Most flu cases can be treated with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter remedies. However, some situations require medical attention to prevent complications and ensure proper recovery. If symptoms become severe or persist beyond a few days, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider.

You should schedule a visit if your flu symptoms:

Last more than 3 days with high fever – A prolonged fever may indicate a more serious infection or complication.

Include shortness of breath or chest pain – These signs could suggest pneumonia or another condition that requires immediate care.

Seem to improve but then worsen – A rebound in symptoms may signal a secondary infection or complication.

Cause dehydration or trouble keeping fluids down – Vomiting or diarrhea may require IV fluids or further treatment.

Lead to confusion, dizziness, or persistent vomiting – These neurological or digestive symptoms should be evaluated promptly.

Affect individuals with chronic conditions – People with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems are at higher risk of flu-related complications
